National Walking Month 2014

May is National Walking Month! Living Streets, a national charity together with Walk England have joined forces to promote people to walk anywhere and everywhere in the month of May.

Walking is one of the simplest forms of exercise yet very effective and beneficial to our health. Walking helps to strengthen our muscles and bones, it controls our weight, reduces blood pressure and releases endorphins which improves our mood. Walking regularly can help prevent future health conditions including stroke, diabetes and certain types of cancer. It also promotes better sleep and can give you a boost of energy when you are feeling lethargic.

There are a number of events taking place in and around the UK to encourage people to have a fun walk with their friends and family.

As a physiotherapist I aim to promote walking and exercise, however I often come across many people who struggle to walk. Difficulty walking, or in physiotherapy terms “mobilising” may be due to muscle weakness, pain, shortness of breath or fatigue.
